News.com is reporting that the new X Prize will be for a 100 MPG car. I thought that the X Prize was supposed to be for technical feats that were HARD. Modified Prius hybrids are reported to already be getting 250 MPG here and here. If they really want to impress me how about a prize for a system I can stick in my backyard to generate hydrogen via solar power and use that to power the engine in an already modified Prius.

My Mini Gets 34MPG average, I’m sure it could be tuned to get 45.
If you take a look at the other vehicles referenced in the story, there are several, all electric. They would typically require overnight charging and wouldn’t have the range of the Prius for long trips without the need to find a charging station. For most people a modified plug-in Prius is still going to get well over 100 MPG. Hell, a stock Prius does better than your mini when tuned. Though, I’ll admit that the mini is more fun to drive and way cuter.
But it’s not just 100mpg. The car must be able to compete in the marketplace. The car is meant to go into production. To even enter the contest (From the initial press release) … a thorough qualification process will assess safety, cost, features and business plans to ensure that only production-capable, consumer-friendly cars compete. Those that qualify will race their vehicles in rigorous cross-country stage races in 2009 and 2010 that combine speed, distance, urban driving and overall performance. The winners will be the vehicles that exceed 100 MPGe, meet strict emissions standards and finish in the fastest time.
